Esch Beach with Kids

A beautiful Lake Michigan beach near Empire with soft sand, clear water, and a creek for little ones to explore.

Just south of Empire in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Esch Beach is one of those places that feels worth the drive. It has soft sand, rolling waves, clear water, and beautiful views of the dunes. Otter Creek flows into Lake Michigan here, creating a fun spot for little ones to splash and explore.

What to Know

  • Limited parking that can fill quickly on busy days

  • Vault toilet only — no bathrooms, changing rooms, or showers

  • Dogs are welcome on the designated dog-friendly side but must be leashed

  • Pack it in, pack it out

  • National Park pass required

Esch Beach is also home to endangered Great Lakes piping plovers, so give them plenty of space and stay out of marked nesting areas.

Third Coast Kids tip: If you're visiting with little kids, the creek is a fun place to let them splash and explore before heading over to the Lake Michigan beach.

Plan Your Visit

Esch Beach is a great addition to a Sleeping Bear Dunes beach day, especially if you're already exploring Empire and the surrounding area. Go early on busy summer days to beat the crowds.
